Pool Acid Wash FAQ
What is a pool acid wash?
An acid wash is a deep cleaning process that uses a muriatic acid solution to remove the top layer of plaster, eliminating stubborn stains, calcium scale buildup, algae embedded in the surface, and discoloration. It restores your pool's plaster to a like-new appearance.
How often does a pool need an acid wash?
Most pools need an acid wash every 5–7 years, depending on water chemistry maintenance, calcium hardness levels, and exposure to debris. Pools in areas with hard water (300–500 ppm calcium) may need it more frequently due to scale buildup.
How long does an acid wash take?
A typical acid wash takes one full day. The pool must be drained first, which can take several hours. After the acid wash is complete, the pool is refilled and balanced. Total turnaround time is usually 1–3 days depending on refill speed.
Does an acid wash damage the plaster?
An acid wash removes a thin layer of plaster (approximately 1/16 inch). When performed correctly by experienced technicians, it is safe and does not compromise the structural integrity of the plaster. However, acid washing should not be done more than once every 5–7 years to avoid excessive plaster wear.
How much does a pool acid wash cost?
Pricing depends on pool size, plaster condition, and whether draining and refilling are included. Call us at (214) 402-8677 for a free estimate.
Can I acid wash my pool myself?
We strongly recommend against DIY acid washing. Muriatic acid is dangerous to handle, improper application can permanently damage your plaster, and the process requires proper safety equipment, drainage knowledge, and chemical neutralization expertise.
What should I do after an acid wash?
After an acid wash, the pool needs to be refilled and the water chemistry rebalanced from scratch. We handle the entire process including startup, initial chemical balancing, and a follow-up visit to ensure everything is stable.
Is an acid wash the same as tile cleaning?
No. Acid washing treats the entire plaster surface of the pool. Tile cleaning specifically targets calcium scale and stains on the tile line at the water level. Tile cleaning can be done as a standalone service or as part of a full acid wash.
